Magma 2021/22 Poetry Competition

Deadline extended to midnight Sunday, 16 January

Magma’s 2021/22 poetry competitions are now open for your prize-winning long and short poems.

We are very excited to announce that Marvin Thompson is the judge for the Judge’s Prize for poems of 11 to 50 lines and he will be reading all entries – there are no sifters. The Editors’ Prize is judged by a panel of Magma Editors and is for poems of up to 10 lines. The prize money for both competitions is the same, so double your chances and try your luck at both.

Marvin Thompson was born in London to Jamaican parents and now lives in south Wales. He is the winner of the Poetry Society’s National Poetry Competition, 2020. He was the first poet of colour to win since 1981.

His debut poetry collection, Road Trip (Peepal Tree Press, 2020), is a Poetry Book Society Recommendation. It was also shortlisted for the Wales Book of the Year award.

The Guardian described Road Trip as an ‘invigorating journey through the complexities of black British family life.’ The Telegraph selected Road Trip as one of the Poetry Books of the Year for 2020.

First prize for the Judge’s and Editors’ Prize is £1000, second prize £300 and third prize £150. The six prize-winning poems will be published in Magma and there will also be five special mentions for the Judge’s Prize and for the Editors’ Prize. Winning and commended poets will be invited to read their poems at a Magma Competition Event in Spring 2022.

The entry fees are £5 for the first poem, £4 for the second and £3.50 for the third and each subsequent poem. Magma magazine subscribers benefit from reduced fees: £4 for the first poem, £3 for the second, and £2.50 for the third and each subsequent poem. You can subscribe to Magma from £18.50 via our Get Magma page. The competition closes on 14 January 2022.
